AHSOKA'S FATE?

The excellent artist Adriano Ticiano has sent us another splendid piece of work-this time a dark and disturbing image of what may possibly be Ahsoka Tano's future at the end of THE CLONE WARS animated series. I say possible, because only George Lucas and Dave Filoni really know what's going to happen with this popular character, who has become an inspiration to younger STAR WARS fans across the globe.

I personally don't want them to chicken out on what will happen with Ahsoka. When the series comes to its eventual conclusion, hopefully long past Season Five, she has to confront her former Master, Anakin Skywalker, now as Darth Vader.

AFICIONADO REVIEW: "WOOKIEE HUNT"

Please note: This blog contains a very mild spoiler...

I don't normally post advance reviews of CLONE WARS episodes (especially as US fans don't see the two part finale until April 1st), but I saw WOOKIEE HUNT yesterday and I'm happy to report that its an absolute winner which STAR WARS fans will love from beginning to end, and a real highlight of this season. Dave Filoni does a terrific job with this episodes direction, with its shades of PLANET OF THE APES, JURASSIC PARK and PREDATOR, and Chewbacca's introduction into the tale is cleverly handled. The much-loved iconic character, thoroughly immersed into the story (whch Expanded Universe fans will really get a kick out of), gets to show all of his best characteristics and works well with his new colleagues-in-arms. And boy is he a beast of action this time! As shown in the online documentary, the animators, alongside Peter Mayhew, have really done a fine job re-creating the character, and kudos to the sound design for resurrecting all the great Chewie barks and subtle language noises, too. My only complaint is that the episode, already tight and exciting, was too short. Another two or three minutes would have been even better-lets hope the eventual Blu-ray and DVD season release of this episode has extra material.

With a last ten minutes where fans of all ages will be cheering at the screen a lot, WOOKIEE HUNT brings Season Three of THE CLONE WARS, after a mixed start, to a very successful and very satisfying close.

Episode rating: a worthy 5 out of 5

"CLONE WARS" PREVIEW: "WITCHES OF THE MIST"

The very nice people at SKY MOVIES have sent us their latest press release for the new episode this week showing exclusively in the UK on SKY MOVIES PREMIERE and HD.

The Must-See Conclusion to an Epic Three-Part Clone Wars Arc

Sent to track down the mysterious figure behind the deaths of several Jedi, Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi find themselves on the trail of Count Dooku’s newest apprentice – the monstrous Savage Opress. However, Dooku and Asajj Ventress discover that their creation has a will of his own, and that he has grown more powerful than either of them had anticipated – perhaps even more powerful than the combined forces of the Jedi and the Sith. The end begins in “Witches of the Mist,” the final chapter of a thrilling, three-part Clone Wars arc – airing at 5.30pm Saturday 29th January on Sky Movies Premiere/HD.

Driven by the Machiavellian machinations of Count Dooku, the series’ various villains come face to face at last in a climactic clash of red sabers. Dooku, Opress and Ventress – all are manifestations of evil, yet each is so distinct. It’s not until these three titans are brought together in the heat of conflict, however, that their nuances and differences become truly clear.

“With Dooku, the series' direction is pushing his character more towards that of a masterful diplomat, concealing a sinister agenda beneath a veil of polite sophistication,” says Corey Burton, voice of Dooku – and countless other Clone Wars characters, both good and evil. “He's a subversive political overlord – a major marketing force and seducer for the dark side ‘brand.’ It's all about his personal enrichment, power and position within the hierarchy; there's nothing intentionally cruel or vengeful in his manner, or behind his dastardly actions – as a Sith Lord, it's just how things are done to most efficiently preside over the fate of the galaxy. Mustache-twirling displays are beneath his sense of dignity.”

While Dooku is as consumed by his quest for power as he is by his own sense of sophistication, Ventress is wholly unconcerned by the niceties of evil. Driven by a desire for revenge, her motivation is raw and real – a product and a reflection of her own difficult past.

“She’s been wronged by so many, and I believe her experiences will lead her in an even more powerful direction,” says Nika Futterman, voice of Ventress. “We are finally beginning to understand what makes Asajj tick; I think this is her quest for revenge and not power like the Sith. That’s what separates her. She does things that may seem like her quest for power, but, I think she aligned herself with the dark side as a means to an end. She doesn’t ever forget who has done right by her and, of course, who has done her wrong. All this time, I had hoped that I would be able to delve into what made her so fabulous and complex. It turns out my hopes are coming true!”

Serving as a foil for the final confrontation between the former master and his jilted apprentice is the massively powerful Opress. Ostensibly a blunt instrument of evil, the monstrous creation is nonetheless imbued with a perverse humanity of his own – brought to the surface by sharp writing and a soulful performance by screen legend Clancy Brown (Highlander, The Shawshank Redemption).

“I'd been a fan of The Clone Wars since the first season; and then caught up with the second season with my son,” says Brown. “He was excited because it was Star Wars and I was excited about the role not just because it was in the Star Wars universe but because the writing is so sophisticated. There was never any question from me about Savage's motives and what was going on because I was familiar with the characters, and you can go another layer deeper.”

THE CLONE WARS: INTRODUCING SAVAGE OPRESS!

2011 will no doubt be the year of Savage Opress!

Note: This feature contains possible SPOILERS

Savage Opress. He's not just your "average horny little devil." He wants to spill blood. Blood, in particular, that belongs to the Jedi Knights.

Trouble with a capital T!

When Ray Park's indomitable and terrifying destructive force, Darth Maul, met his final end - sliced in half by Ewan McGregor's Force intuitive Obi-Wan Kenobi in one of THE PHANTOM MENACE's greatest scenes (which we can't wait to see in 3D. Take that, Mister Simon Pegg!) - audiences around the world were thrilled yet disappointed to see that he had been killed off so quickly and would not return for more high octane action. So, Opress, one of Maul's equally highly trained brothers, is George Lucas, his daughter Kaite, and Dave Filoni's attempts, which will be very successful, to try to atone for the fall of the earlier Zabrakian, and we're sure all kinds of hell will be following within his large shadow when he, a chaos causing gift to Count Dooku by the Night Sisters of Dathomir, eventually takes on the Republic forces for numerous acts of Sith propelled slaughter. There are also rumours floating about on cyberpace - and please take them with a pinch of salt - that Ahsoka may eventually (and we're talking at the end of the animated series entire run) fall victim to this new warrior, of which her death will propel Anakin further to his destiny with the Dark Side as he surely gets his revenge! Of these rumours, I can only quote Qui-Gon Jinn: "Be wary!"

REVIEW: "THE CLONE WARS" SEASON TWO DVD / BLU-RAY

The term “Second Best” takes on a whole new, more positive meaning with the release of George Lucas’s sophomore season of STAR WARS: THE CLONE WARS being released today on Blu-ray and DVD from WARNER BROTHERS.

With its improved animation and a bold new direction of storytelling, bigger risks are taken this year on the episode front, and now has never been a better time to enjoy the action, honour and heroics of our favourite STAR WARS heroes as well as the grand ambition, evil and all round destructive power of the dark forces they fight against.

On Felucia, the Clone Troopers provide cover fire for the Jedi in the season's opening episode THE HOLOCRON HEIST.

Resplendent, especially on the Blu-ray format where everything is so crisp and alive, presented in their correct aspect viewing ratios, with piercing sound design, this unique series feels even more remarkable and individualistic than ever. And, despite what could have been a heavy continued war backdrop (which is marvelously realized in the epic four part attempt by the Jedi to re-take the weapons factory world of Geonosis, starting with LANDING AT POINT RAIN), the beauty and wonder of the STAR WARS saga is as evocative as ever, made by a production team whose love for the subject matter shines through. Supervising Animation Director Dave Filoni and his team continue to build on what has been developed with the shows successful premiere season cementing further the building blocks of a series that will last a few more years yet, and getting to indulge themselves in an exciting new arena for STAR WARS adventure and characterization. Just as excited with the possibilities of the show is the series creator, George Lucas, who contributes many of its overall storylines this year, even getting to make a personal tribute to his late iconic film-making friend, Akira Kurosawa, with his unique STAR WARS take of the Japanese film THE SEVEN SAMURAI (known in the US as the ever classic THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN) that’s worth checking out. And there’s all kinds of other storytelling to keep the pot warm, too, from humour to comedy, and from action to horror (check out the yucky parasites in the episode BRAIN INVADERS or the undead Geonosian insects in LEGACY OF TERROR. Yuck!)

Readers of the AFICIONADO Blog will already know what our top five episodes were of this season, but special nods must also be given to CHILDREN OF THE FORCE, BOUNTY HUNTERS, CAT AND MOUSE (set before the events of the 2008 pilot movie), and WEAPONS FACTORY for their great storytelling and fast paced adventure. There’s also some intriguing, if not perfect, individual stories to compliment the epic battles, with several tales set on the political homeworld of the Republic, Coruscant, and involving Padme Amidala (nicely voiced by Catherine Taber) as she investigates murder, corruption, and deceit within the political system (look out for a STAR WARS variation of the classic Hitchcock movie NOTORIOUS when our favourite ex-Queen gets caught up in spying on an ex-lover). Despite the occasional story flaws of these quieter tales, these episodes are still generally more enjoyable than most other dramatic series on real-life TV!

The series also bravely, if sometime confusingly, starts to play around with its own time frames, setting some episodes from Season Two before certain episodic events seen in Season One. And adding to the general acclaim of the storytelling are a lot of innovative firsts, including premiere appearances in the animated format for the young evil-to-be Boba Fett (voiced by original actor Daniel Logan), with his continuing story arc in wanting revenge for the death of his father from the movie ATTACK OF THE CLONES, and the introduction of numerous bounty hunters (including the classic THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK reptilian villain, Bossk). This seasons overall title: RISE OF THE BOUNTY HUNTERS effectively covers its first and last quarters with some very enjoyable episodes and the new set of villains, including last years freshly introduced, fiendishly clever and adaptable rogue Cad Bane, who proves a serious challenge to our Jedi heroes, and equally provides the shows writers with some valuable breathing space whist they plan bigger and bolder stories for the previous seasons existing line-up of baddies so as not to make them feel stale. Sadly, bald female assassin Asajj Ventress makes no appearance this year, but cyborg Jedi-killer General Grievous makes up for this and returns for more foul deeds in a very exciting and highly effective two part adventure. Overall, there’s a little bit more darkness thrown into the mix this season, what with the extra bounty hunter threat, which the production team have obviously initiated so as to make the animated series occasionally a little bit closer to the harder edged sequel movie, THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK, rather than the fantasy of STAR WARS.

Outside of the conflict of Jedi/Clones against Separatists there’s also destruction on an even bigger scale with the fun homage to the monster movies of the fifties and sixties, with the GODZILLA/ KING KONG like Zillo beast rampaging and striking terror into the citizens of planets Malastare and Coruscant in another memorable two parter that’s especially fun to watch for the younger audiences.

Our heroes use their abilities to find the missing Jedi-to-be in CHILDREN OF THE FORCE.

With Year Two there are also more attempts to have different characters interacting with each other, and less stories of Anakin and Obi-Wan together than previously. This year we see tales with Jedi pairings like Ahsoka Tano with new Jedi characters like the marvelous old timer Tera Sinube (in the episode LIGHTSABER LOST) or with her ex-Master, Plo Koon (for a LETHAL TRACKDOWN), plus intriguing combos like Mace with Anakin, or Obi with Adi Gallia, which helps keep the series fresh and interesting whilst stimulating the series writers more.

Die-hard STAR WARS fans will also find out a little bit more about the race who constructed the armour later worn by the enigmatic Boba Fett - the people of Manadalore, a planet almost wiped out by war years before, and whose Monarch is struggling to stop the return of her people’s war-faring ways. Called in to help, Obi-Wan Kenobi’s past relationship with the alluring Duchess of Satine is plutonically re-kindled in a three part tale which has some good moments. In this more serious season, another plus is that, for haters of comedy character Jar Jar Binks, they’ll be able to breathe a sigh of relief that he’s not in this second year, though I personally thought there were a couple of new irritants far worse in replacing him, namely the Seth Green voiced droid Todo and Republic Police Inspector Divo, the latter I found particularly despicable and out of place in the series.

Beyond my individual preferences, though, Lucas and his empire continue to create stories that appeal to the broad spectrum, and that’s the ultimate key to STAR WARS evergreen success in films, TV and beyond. This particular series is deservedly popular with four generations and has now uniquely reached the point where selected classic characters, translated into animation from both movie trilogies, now seamlessly interact with the new series cast (like Jedi Padawan Ahsoka Tano, herself an emerging character with a healthy fan base), with more additions on the horizon, from not only the films but the STAR WARS Saga’s vast history in the Expanded Universe media of publishing, too!

Following on from the animated adventures, on the extras side of things, sadly there are no extended episodes as seen with the Season One boxset, as the production team pretty much have the episodes running lengths constructed to a key art form now, with little plot and character wastage, though some brief extended scenes do appear here and there in the special features area, alongside 2 and 3-D animation, key interviews with some of the artists/designers, animatics and character templates. There’s also several enjoyable, if still too short, documentaries on key episodes of Season Two, like the Holocron Trilogy that opened the year, the Geonosian saga, the Zillo Beast and the return of Boba Fett.

Overall, the extras are very good, high quality and value for money (including a lovely 68 page production journal book with selected notes and info linked with key artwork of the developing series and characters), but there’s still not enough of them and I wanted to see and know more, in addition to things like stills galleries, episode commentaries, and putting out all the original episodic trailers done for the US CARTOON NETWORK. Especially more from the production side (in both the US and Singapore) would have been very satisfying. As with all Lucasfilm STAR WARS related extras, we always get a good amount of them, but never as much as we’d hoped. Let’s hope the upcoming Blu-ray set of the movies breaks that tradition and gives us much more than we could ever have dreamed!

"THE CLONE WARS" SEASON TWO. SWA's TOP FIVE EPISODES. NO 1: "LANDING AT POINT RAIN"

We've reached the top of the tree in our list of STAR WARS AFICIONADO's best five episodes of STAR WARS: THE CLONE WARS Season Two (out tomorrow in the UK on DVD and Blu-ray from WARNER BROTHERS) and, we have to say, last year didn't get any better than with its critically acclaimed fifth episode: LANDING AT POINT RAIN. I think you'll all agree with me that this was THE CLONE WARS at its finest moment so far, and that it truly stands apart by quite a distance from many of the other excellent stories of the year, especially with its tough war to the hilt story (the prior liberation of Ryloth was a picnic compared to this!) and superbly advanced animation, in what was a combined and ever evolving effort from George Lucas, Dave Filoni and their animation teams, and an adventure which was also one of the the most difficult to pull off with such a short production schedule. Faith manages, however, and LANDING AT POINT RAIN would prove to be an absolute winner from start to finish.

The attack on Geonosis begins...

And here's just five, from so many, reasons, why it deserves its success:


..but the Clone casualty rate is horrific.

The Battle of Geonosis: Take Two. The majority of STAR WARS fans may have all thrilled to the amazing revolutionary CG action of EPISODE II's Geonosian arena and the outwards spill of fierce battle between thousands of Clone Troopers, led by numerous Jedi Knights, against Separatist Battle Droids (amidst amazing vehicles and heavy weaponry of all shapes and sizes caught in between!) - the stuff of my imagination when thinking about what happened in the mysterious Clone Wars years ago as a child, but George Lucas, ever the effects challenger, wasn't. There was still so many ideas and action sequences planned for the film in the animatics pre-visualisation that, for time and pace reasons, he just wasn't able to bring to the conflict, resulting in LANDING AT POINT RAIN being the ultimate chance to rectify this, whilst also proving to be the most exciting, perilous, scary and heroic episode of the season, and totally living up to our high expectations from its opening scenes. Its STAR WARS meets APOCALYPSE NOW meets BAND OF BROTHERS, with cinematography thats one step above so many other modern cartoons, and realistically close to the kind of conflicts our soldiers are involved with in our modern day world, but also brilliantly transferred into the kind of STAR WARS universe action that viewers of all ages are excited to see. And there hasn't been an episode as well paced and immaculately plotted as this since.

Despite overwhelming losses, the Jedi and Clones fight on!

"It's a Trap!" Right from the start, the Republic invasion plans are thwarted -well, they would be, with Palpatine being told of them!- as the Geonosian army lays ready for their attackers every move. Gunships and Clone Troopers as are quickly taken down in savage numbers, and the odds of the Jedi fulfilling their their objectives in reaching the Geonosian droid foundries looks grim as their three pronged attack becomes confused and then shattered. Its only through the sheer determination of Jedi leaders Anakin Skywalker and newly introduced to the animation front Ki-Adi Mundi that victory is finally grabbed from the jaws of defeat.

Geonosian swoops. Its a disturbing sequence, effectively realised with great sound design, when the repellent Geonosians, weapons blazing, fly down from the skies to kidnap and brutally kill Clone Troopers left, right and centre. Its the type of scene with the creatures that was almost in EPISODE II but didn't make it to fruition. The dread atmosphere continues when Ki-Adi and his remaining forces enter the dark and foreboding caves shortcut as they press onto their destination, and then come under attack from an enemy, working best within its natural habitat, picking them off one by one. Thankfully, to cheering fans of the Clone Troopers, our Republic friendly soldiers didn't forget to bring their flamethrowers to use against the alien bugs!

Down but not out, Obi-Wan Kenobi prepares for rescue.

Obi-Wan injured. We've seen him resolute and determined in the face of battle and triumphing against overwhelming odds, and we've seen his raw physical power as a Jedi in action against the likes of Darth Maul, but we've never seen him so badly wounded and almost down for the count as he is in this episode, when his Gunship takes the full brunt of an enemy counter-attack and crashlands on the desert plains of Geonosis- his men dead, and overwhelming enemy firepower moving in. Bravely, if barely able to walk, and his Force resources weakened, he only just manages to hold out for rescue. You can see in his brilliantly animated war and injury strained eyes, just able to clutch his lightsaber, that, when hes finally rescued, he's out for the count and exhausted by battle -  a shocking sight to see for one of the series most beloved and action orientated characters, and a further indication that this episode is showing us the most brutal and decisive conflict yet in the Clone Wars.

Heroes of the Republic: Anakin Skywalker and Ahsoka Tano.

The heroes without fear: Anakin, Ahsoka and Rex. Never has their been a more centralised, daring and courageous group of Republic era war heroes than these three as, against all odds and any risk of success, they storm into the heart of the enemy defenses. One of the episodes many adrenalin charged moments, which keeps the audiences on the edge of their seats, must be towards the end of the episode when Anakin and Ahsoka are fighting back to back on the wall of the Geonosian barricade battlements, outnumbered and just about holding their own until the moment where those dread blaster ball Droidekas burst upwards from hidden emplacements and begin their laser volley onslaught. Seeing their friends cornered, ever loyal Clone Captain Rex, with the help of his fellow officers, propels himself upwards to become their surprise ace in the hole in what must surely be one of the most memorable moments of STAR WARS action packed heroics ever seen in any of its mediums, ending with the enemies enclosure breached and Anakin and Ahoska making the kind of leap from a huge explosion that wouldn't have been out of place in a DIE HARD movie, with a screaming, soon Force held Rex following right behind them in full Bruce Willis scream mode! A tremendous sequence.

Jedi Trap! Ahsoka Tano: prisoner of Cad Bane in CARGO OF DOOM.

"Almost there!"

Yes, Red Leader's words are in our heads as we're about to reach Pole Position as to the Top Five episodes of Season Two of THE CLONE WARS (out on UK DVD and Blu-ray from 15th November, from WARNER BROTHERS), and it was a toughie to make the final selection, but CARGO OF DOOM, despite much worthy consideration, is ultimately Number Two.

1. Cad Bane. At his most intimidating, dangerous and cunning, this Bounty Hunter without remorse is ruthlessly and efficiently determined to fulfill his current mission for the Separatists, and he proves one slippery customer for our brave Anakin and Ahsoka in trying to corner and battle. Its a shocking moment later in the episode when he captures and electrifies Ahsoka, then threatens to blast her into space if Anakin refuses to co-operate. Voice actor veteran Corey Burton truly brings this unique character - who would have been marvellous in a live action STAR WARS film - to animated reality, whilst the Durosian Bounty Hunter's overall design, with that amazing DEADWOOD-style hat, is superb.

2. Death of a Jedi. The grim, tortured demise of Rodian Jedi, Bolla Ropal, is quite a shocking and sad moment in the series, subtly underplayed and sensitively handled for the series younger audience by the production team. Despite Bane's lack of concern, even the Battle Droids in the episode join us in our sorrow at his loss.

3. Zero G battle. Kudos for the inspired opening space conflict with the Republic Walkers on the Separatists cruisers hull, but its the superb Zero Gravity battle interior sequence that is the highlight for me, which apparently proved quite a challenge to choreograph and edit to the right length during the production process. Love the moment when Skywalker almost has Bane and the stolen Holocron before Artoo restores the hangar to normality, the ceiling walking Clone soldier with the heavy weaponry and the balletic but deadly movements of Ahsoka.

4. Amping up the tension. George Krstic's script is a winner: full of incident and building up the menace and the threat of the damaged and destructing Separatist cruiser as the episode progresses. Its an action/ adventure set within a race against time disaster movie, as Anakin and co. have to rescue Bolla, get the captured Holcron and Kiber crystal, capture or take out Cad Bane if they can and get off the exploding enemy vessel. And there's that great ending where everybody presumes Bane is dead. Think again. CARGO OF DOOM is pure STAR WARS, executed with style and visual flair by the much missed Rob Coleman. And on the humour front, how can we not make special mention of the fun little moment where Captain Rex bangs his head ala the Stormtrooper in EPISODE IV. Nice touch!

5. The Jedi Holocron/Kybur Crystal. They've been the stuff of legend in the Expanded Universe (with the Kybur Crystal having been at the very dawn of the printed STAR WARS world with 1978's Alan Dean Foster fun tale, SPLINTER OF THE MIND'S EYE), and here we get a brief but intriguing look at how they operate, demonstrated in a mysterious and fascinating scene (with nice accompanying sound design) involving Anakin's forced opening of them. I imagine we'll see more of these devices, and what else they store, at further points in the continuing series.

SKY MOVIES HD have very kindly sent us their latest press release for this weeks UK premiere screening of THE CLONE WARS Season Three episode CORRUPTION, which sees the return of the Mandalorians and their Duchess Satine.

Mandalore's Peace Is Threatened In All-New Episode Of Star Wars: The Clone Wars

On a diplomatic mission to Mandalore, Senator Padmé Amidala uncovers a sinister plot lurking beneath the pacifist planet’s serene façade. With the help of Duchess Satine, she investigates a mysterious illness spreading among Mandalore’s children, discovering corruption that extends into the highest levels of the Mandalorian government. An all-new episode of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, “Corruption,” airs at 5.30pm Saturday 13th November on Sky Movies Premiere/HD.

“Corruption” explores a system divided. Deep in the midst of an identity crisis made even worse by the widespread turmoil of the Clone Wars, the people of Mandalore find themselves torn between their violent past and their leader’s promise of peace for the future.

“It’s a fascinating culture at a really interesting time,” says Dave Filoni, Supervising Director of Star Wars: The Clone Wars. “Mandalore has a long history of violence, and they’re trying to move away from that. But this is all taking place in the middle of a galaxy-wide civil war, so it’s difficult for Satine to make a case for peace when there’s so much violence all around. And that’s exactly why peace is so important to her.”

While Season Two’s visit to Mandalore saw the schism reflected in the explicit aggression of the Death Watch, the latest plot indicates a far more subversive threat – reaching into the highest echelons of the Mandalorian power hierarchy.

“There are bigger threats to peace than the Death Watch,” says Filoni. “We’ve seen their approach in Season Two; they used violence as their message. But political corruption can be far more damaging in the long run. The scale’s so much broader here, and the stakes are system-wide. Ultimately, Mandalore’s allegiances are key to the Clone Wars, so every little transgression can have ripple effects throughout the war. Corruption can spread, and it’s threatening to poison Satine’s best efforts.”

Without the explosive threats of the Death Watch, the story necessarily takes an altogether different tone. Teamed with Padmé for the investigation Satine sets out to uncover the threat to her power – and to Mandalore’s peaceful future. Though they come under fire as the investigation heats up, the two women face dangers with far-reaching consequences even greater than mere threats to their own personal well-being.

“Whenever we visit Satine, we’re going to see a war of ideals,” says Filoni. “She’s very steadfast in her beliefs, and that’s what makes her a good leader. She’s got a tough job, though. She is often undermined by her own people, and her core beliefs are even at odds with the beliefs of the other Clone Wars heroes – including the Jedi and the Senate. Ultimately, they all want the same thing – peace – but they have different thresholds. With an endgame that is so important to the entire galaxy, compromises can be difficult – even when it comes to the means by which peace is achieved.”

We're getting closer to the top of the league now, as AFICIONADO brings you its five favourite episodes, and the top five reasons why we chose them, from THE CLONE WARS Season Two (released in the UK on DVD and Blu-ray from 15th November from WARNER BROTHERS DVD).

At number three, it's R2 COME HOME.

1. Artoo-Detoo. I have always enjoyed the Artoo related episodes of THE CLONE WARS, but this was his finest half hour yet, full of resourcefulness, ability and humour. I loved the almost HOME ALONE-like scenes where he was trying to stop the ascending Bounty Hunters from reaching the trapped Mace and Anakin, and the scene where he brilliantly took on a Gundark and trapped it on a Jedi starfighter smashing into a boulder! With the final scene of this totally satisfying episode, where he rushes into the Jedi Temple with his rescue message, I was just as out of breath from his adventure as he was. Special mention must also be made to the other charming little Astro Droid, R8-B7, that was with Mace Windu-he was a cute little fella and it was sad when he got destroyed.

2. Bounty Hunters! Just about living up to the Season's overall title of RISE OF THE BOUNTY HUNTERS, we finally got a large gathering of baddies, including the excellent, totally heartless Aurra Sing, the incompetent and greedy Castas, and a little bit more screen time for the Trandoshan reptile, Bossk (seen in the shadows in the previous episode), nicely voiced by Drew Bradley Baker. And then there was young Boba Fett in a story arc that was, despite a slightly weak finale in LETHAL TRACKDOWN, overall pretty good and Daniel Logan did a creditable job in making Fett both a little brat and someone we feel slight pity for as he travels down a similar path to evil as Anakin Skywalker. The series producers aren't going to rush the ultimate genesis of Boba Fett, though, and its going to be intriguing to see just how far they travel in his development during the rest of the animated series duration. And will we see him wear the eventual classic trilogy costume by its end?

3. Slave One vs Artoo's Jedi Starfighter. A superb chase and battle sequence, exhilarating and both evocatively animated and sound depicted, first against the backdrop of the impressive vista of the crashed and in flames Republic Cruiser and then out into deep space as Artoo make the crucial decision of which Ring Engine to lock onto and escape with. Its a tense scene- a battle of wits, of machine versus human- that's brilliantly done, and just as good as anything in the actual films.

4. Boba Fett's helmet. A super moment of realisation and destruction that's a worthy continuation from ATTACK OF THE CLONES, when it finally dawns on Mace whom the culprit is responsible for trying to kill him in the previous TV episode. The way that the helmet is highlighted, with that little twang of spaghetti-western like music by series composer Kevin Kiner, in the animated cinematography is very effective, and then there's that clever little trap that's sprung the moment Anakin picks it up for examination. Another great STAR WARS scene that makes the upcoming development of the Boba Fett-to-be more intriguing and noteworthy.

5. Harder Edge. Despite the great comedy and fast paced, exciting visual moments, this episode stands out as being of a darker edge than it has been for some time, and an element that series animation director Dave Filoni was keen to bring in for this three part tale linked to both Boba's return and to THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK. R2 COME HOME is a fine continuation of the boys need for revenge started in the previous episode. Further, the treatment of Commander Killian and his captured party is pretty tough, and there's also the death of Clone Commander Ponds following on in the next episode which proved a sad moments for fans of the Republic soldiers.

"THE CLONE WARS" SEASON TWO. SWA's TOP FIVE EPISODES. NO 4: "GRIEVOUS INTRIGUE"

The DVD and Blu-ray release celebration countdown to my favourite Season Two episodes continues with GRIEVOUS INTRIGUE.

Here's my top five reasons as to why its on the list:

1. General Grievous. After a months Xmas break, the second season resumed with the kind of explosive start it needed and deserved, with the re-emergence of the vile and cowardly Cyborg bully, who has nothing on his mind but conquest and the destruction of the Jedi. And in this episode he has a veritable stable of its top members to fight against, starting off with an epic duel, alongside his nasty servant Magna Droids with Eeth Koth, who he captures and viciously tortures, followed by one of several early pre-EPISODE III face-offs against Obi-Wan, and then Adi Gallia. After his absence for over a year, Grievous's re-introduction, always carefully planed for by the series producers so that he doesn't get over-used, added more well deserved menace and action to the series. And, like the JAMES BOND villains of old, he just doesn't play to the rules of combat at all, giving him an unpredictable edge, ready to sacrifice his droids and anyone else, against his Jedi enemies that's fun to watch.

2. The lightsaber battles. The lightning fast opener between Grievous and Koth was terrific, as was the great Obi-Wan battle (I loved the sparring conversations they have: pure STAR WARS), and then that battle with Kenobi, Gallia and the Clone Troopers (I always like to see a force of our bucket head troops get stuck in for some brute force, hand to hand combat against the general. I think Nick Gillard, Stunt Co-ordinator on the Prequel films, would have been proud of some of the choreographed action on display here.

3. More Jedi. Great to see Koth (no longer dead from the Expanded Universe) and Gallia finally become realised in animation form and in action. Overall, it was one of the strengths of this season that we got to see a lot more of the other Temple Jedi, too (like the fun Tera Sinube, who gets a nice showcase in the enjoyable LIGHTSABER LOST). Too bad about the unused Sistine Chapel overhead shot, though (recently mentioned on the Blu-ray release by Dave Filoni-he's promised it will apprear one day!).

4. Anakin in action! Another chance to see our baddie to be in some fine heroics and daredevil piloting, it was a great scene where he uses his ship to board Grievous's upside down, followed by a cool duel against the Tactical Droid and its Battle Droid acolytes (as well as those rather deadly and very cool Commando Droids) in order to rescue the bridge held Koth.

5. Great staging. Taking a beat from the previous CARGO OF DOOM, the pace of the adventure story never flags in its plotting (nicely written by Ben Edlund) and execution, with some cool retro references to Classic STAR WARS thrown in (like the homage to EPISODE IV's opening boarding battle, but with Clone Troopers as the goodies!). GRIEVOUS INTRIGUE is extremely well edited and directed (the latter by series regular Giancarlo Volpe).

"THE CLONE WARS" SEASON TWO. SWA's TOP FIVE EPISODES. NO 5: "THE ZILLO BEAST STRIKES BACK"

Watch out Palpatine, the Zillo Beast is coming after you!

With next weeks release in the UK of the DVD and Blu-ray box sets of the complete Season Two of THE CLONE WARS, I thought it would be nice to do a mini-countdown celebration by listing, on a day to day basis, my top five personal favourite episodes of the season, and my top five personal reasons as to why I enjoyed them so much.

First off, it's number five: THE ZILLO BEAST STRIKES BACK!

1. The Zillo Beast. A marvellous design and beautifully realised creation, and its scenes of sympathy, nobility, anger (loved that look it gives Palpy!) and destructive strength are a fine homage to the GODZILLA and KING KONG films of yesteryear. Its a genuinely sad moment when the beast, trying to survive against the adversity its faced with, is finally felled.

2. Supreme Chancellor Palpatine. Ian Abercombie clearly relishes his voice acting skills as the evil Republic leader determined to mine the natural defensive strengths of the beast for his own personal intent (and another weapon to use against the Jedi-a story avenue perhaps to be explored in a later episode of the series?). Deliciously evil throughout, its a great finale scene where he cruelly and happily orders the cloning of the dead animal.

3. Yoda and Aayla Secura on top of the Zillo Beast! Considering he was a last minute inclusion to the episode its really cool to see old frog face leaping in, out and around the creature. And Aayla's pretty nimble, too!

4. Together Again! Its great to pretty much see all the film series core main cast re-united in one episode- a very rare opportunity indeed, and especially fun when its for a terrific episode (particularly nice to see Artoo and Threepio back as a duo, too!).

5. Coruscant battle damaged. The city planet's centre looks more devastated in this episode than it did from the huge space battle that takes place in the skyline/atmosphere above it in EPISODE III! Who doesn't love a monster on the rampage bit of carnage, especially when its a great showcase for the writers and animators to have a bit of spectacular fun with/for the audience.

Star Wars Creator George Lucas Sees Some Action in an All-New Episode of Star Wars: The Clone Wars!

When Pantoran Chairman Papanoida's family is kidnapped and held for ransom, Ahsoka Tano must team up with Senator Riyo Chuchi to aid the new chairman in recovering his family. It’s a journey deep into the dark underbelly of the Coruscant crime scene, with an unlikely – and immediately recognizable – protagonist painted into a corner and forced into action in “Sphere of Influence,” an all-new episode of Star Wars: The Clone Wars – at 5.30pm Saturday 6th November on Sky Movies Premiere/HD.

Seen only briefly as a background character in Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith, Papanoida will nonetheless appear very familiar to Star Wars fans, film buffs and pop culture aficionados. He is, of course, modeled after Star Wars creator George Lucas – who also wore blue face paint for the character’s live-action cameo debut.

“My appearance in Episode III was just for fun. Mostly, I did it for my kids,” says Lucas. “I was wrapping the series, and I’d never been on-screen in a Star Wars film, even though I’d been making them for decades. With The Clone Wars, I get the best of both worlds, because I get a starring role but don’t have to do any acting or wear any blue make-up.”

Lucas’ children – Amanda, Katie and Jett – also appeared with the director in the live-action outing, and they, too, make their Clone Wars debut in “Sphere of Influence.” None of the Lucas family provides voice-acting for the series, however; Jett’s doppelganger is voiced by Robot Chicken’s Seth Green, while Amanda and Katie’s avatars are voiced by Meredith Salenger (who also voices Barriss Offee) and Nika Futerman (Asajj Ventress), respectively. Lucas himself is voiced by Clone Wars regular Corey Burton (Count Dooku, Cad Bane) – who based the character’s distinctive sound on Orson Welles’ Harry Lime from The Third Man.

While Papanoida is featured fairly passively in his live-action incarnation, the character has an opportunity for a considerably more active role in The Clone Wars. Taking him deep into the Coruscant underground, the Pantoran Chairman’s mission gives him the chance to demonstrate his chops in a few decidedly action-oriented sequences.

“We actually made Papanoida into kind of an action hero,” says Dave Filoni, supervising director of The Clone Wars. “The bad guys have his family, and he goes after them, blasters blazing. Shoot first, ask questions later. His character is very focused on finding and protecting his kids; it’s a desperate situation, and he steps up. It’s a fun episode with a lot of action – and it’s unique, in that our normal heroes give up the spotlight while Papanoida takes matters into his own hands. This was a surreal episode to produce, since the guy on screen was sitting right next to me while we were making it.”

New Allies and Returning Heroes Provide Revelations and Insights into Key Conflicts in an All-New Episode of Star Wars: The Clone Wars!

Joined by familiar faces – from the live-action Saga, previous seasons of The Clone Wars and even the expanded universe – the heroes of the Republic are leading the charge into extended storylines examining the backstory of the Star Wars galaxy. In the series’ third season, The Clone Wars expands and explores stories beyond the front lines – revealing new insights and fresh revelations about the characters, the conflict and even some of the stories we’ve seen so far. “Supply Lines” takes the narrative back before the series’ very first episode. It’s an all-new facet to a fan-favorite storyline - at 5.30pm Saturday 30th October on Sky Movies Premiere/HD.

Ryloth is under siege. Trapped on the surface, Jedi Master Di rallies the local forces with the help of rebel leader Cham Syndulla. Desperate to save them, Senator Bail Organa and Representative Jar Jar Binks are dispatched to the planet of Toydaria, where they must convince the King Katuunko to send aid to Ryloth – before it’s too late.

“This is one of the fun aspects of being this deep into the series,” says Dave Filoni, supervising director of Star Wars: The Clone Wars. “Now that we have two seasons already under our belt, we can go back and look at some different aspects of key moments from the Clone Wars; we can jump around in the timeline. We can explore different aspects and different stories. We have a neat opportunity to blow out stories that we’ve seen already, and look at them from a different perspective, a different point of view – and that’s been an important aspect of Star Wars since the original trilogy.”

Taking place before Yoda’s fateful meeting with King Katuunko on the moon of Rugosa – chronicled in the series premiere episode, “Ambush” – “Supply Lines” sheds light on some of the dramatic events that forged The Clone Wars. It also explores the origins of the Ryloth occupation and the subjugation of the Twi’lek people occupation, explored in the first season’s two-part season finale.

“This conflict is vast, to say the least,” says Filoni. “It’s a big galaxy, and there’s a lot going on at all times. Even two seasons in, we’re only seeing a fraction of the war – key moments that are really focused on the primary heroes from the films. But those moments are framed by heroism and villainy, too, just as there are important events happening concurrently with the key scenes we’ve explored. We’ve got 22 minutes per episode and 22 episodes per season, and we’re still only scratching the surface of the Clone Wars.”

Serving to support existing stories and to build on the overall mythology of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, “Supply Lines” nonetheless promises its own action and surprises. Featuring the return of some fan-favorite characters from the live-action films, the episode also introduces some brand new characters – such as Jedi Master Di.

“We’re going to meet Jedi Master Di,” says Filoni. “I like him a lot; he’s cool and I’d like to be able to do more with him. But you should remember that this is a prequel, and that it takes place before the episodes we’ve seen already. There may be a reason we haven’t seen him after the events of this episode. Here’s a hint: Star Wars characters have a history of suggestive names. Greedo was a greedy bounty hunter. Lobot’s a guy with a computer implanted in his brain, like a lobotomy. General Grievous and Darth Maul are both intent on causing pain and suffering. Han Solo’s a loner. So I’m just saying that maybe Jedi Master Di should watch his back.”
